Experience the ethos of a mediaeval stone yard in which a small group works together with an experienced stone carver to create individual pieces.
Stone carving is one of the most ancient arts in the world and often considered to be the most interesting. Yet carving tools and materials are un complicated.
Many people lead hectic lives that leave them little time for artistic creativity; that side of their nature often remains unexplored. The ancient art of stone carving is a direct, uncomplicated means of self-expression that requires only simple, inexpensive tools. Using simple techniques that do not require great strength, a simple carving can be attempted without lengthy preparation and achieved in a surprisingly short time. After a day's tuition at the Birches Studio it should be possible to set up at home and carry on carving. Stone is a patient medium that can be returned to whenever time permits.
